As the capitol city of the United States, Washington DC is a unique geographic area in the United States that is not a part of a specific state, but also not technically a state in and of itself. The city has a locally elected mayor and city council but the federal government also has the power to overturn local laws. Other than the political complications, the city is full of all of the historic architecture and public institutions one would expect in a national capitol city including government buildings, national museums, and performing arts venues. The city also has plentiful parks and greenspaces that account for nearly 20% of the land usage.

Washington DC sits along the Potomac River to the west and south, and is bordered on the north, east, and southeast by Maryland. It was carved out of land ceded by Maryland and Virginia in 1801. Virginia lies across the Potomac from the city, though Alexandria, Virginia was part of DC until the size of the district was reduced in 1846. This Paper Place map also includes the Anacostia river, which runs south from Maryland and connects to the Potomac just south of the National Mall.

For this Paper Place the shape of the District of Colombia is cut from a piece of heavy white card stock paper with the words “WASHINGTON DC” cut out below.

  • The black frame is 8.75″ (about 22cm) square and 1.125″ (about 3cm) deep. It looks great as part of a gallery wall, and is small enough to fit in some of those weird corners and nooks, or on a bookshelf!
