Commuter Rail MBTA Paper Art

The MBTA Commuter Rail has over 400 miles of track, 12 lines, and 142 stations. It is a massive system that connects downtown Boston to points north, west. and south, and across state lines into Rhode Island. Today’s unified system is a consolidation over time of multiple independently-owned railroad companies that formed beginning in the mid-1800’s to connect the outer suburbs to downtown Boston. That original structure is still visible today with the lines north of Boston mostly terminating at North Station, and the lines that run south of Boston mostly terminating at South Station. The Commuter Rail’s purple color was established in 1974 as part of an effort to revitalize and consolidate the system, which was still operated in a fragmented way before then.

This paper model of a Commuter Rail HSP46 Diesel Locomotive is created from nearly 100 individual pieces of paper, and carefully assembled by hand. The model is mounted to a purple background created with acrylic paint using a mono-printing technique. The black frame is 8.75″ (about 22cm) square and 1.125″ (about 3cm) deep. It looks great as part of a gallery wall, and is small enough to fit in some of those weird corners and nooks, or on a bookshelf!

The MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority) also known as the “T” operates a network of public transportation services across the Boston metro area including the Blue, Orange, Red, and Green subway lines, the rapid transit bus Silver Line, local and express busses, the Commuter Rail system, and several ferry routes.

The “T” logo is a trademark of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority and is licensed to be used in this artwork.
